The Battanbang province is situated in the Northwest side of the Cambodia with a capital city of the same name. Battambang province has an interesting history.Initially, during the Angkor period, the region was split into many territories, namely Amogha Boreak and Bhima Boreak.Throughout the Angkor period, the province prospered due to the hospitable environment for growing fruits and vegetables. However, in the late 15th century, when the Siamese army began to invade the Northwest part of the country, the people of the province were driven out of their homes, thus confiscating the whole province.
At the beginning of 1900’s, descendants of the people who once upon a time occupied the region, demanded that the land should be returned to them, which was once confiscated.Based on the French Siamese Treaty of 1907 these demands were made. As a result the land was returned to their rightful owners and in the same year the entire region was split into three different provinces. The three provinces were Battambang, Siem Reap and Serey Sophorn.Later the region underwent a number of further alterations which includes both geographic and textual alterations.
In the following 40 years after 1940, people of the Battambang province went under an excruciating ordeal of killings, torture and other human rights abuses. This incident took place under the rule of the cruel administrator of Poipet. The period is now known as the killing period.
The region was set free of genocide in 1979 and the first election in the region was held in 1993. Many changes were made to the district during this period, which compromised Battambang. In the present situation the Battambang province contains 13 districts’ namely Banan, Thma Koul, Bat Dambang, Bavel, Ek Phnom, Moung Ruessei, Ratanak Mondol, Sangkae, Samlout, Sampov Loun, Phnum Proek, Kamrieng and Koas Krala.
